  life + style to you
June 27th, 2008

Ah, Sad Times for Seattle Sports: the Mariners stink and have fired John McLaren, the Sonics are probably off to Okla-freakin-homa sooner than later, and we still have three months until football starts. The good news is that our future Major League Soccer team, Seattle Sounders FC, has recently signed their first and so far only player, Sebastien Le Toux. Hopefully he'll bring us back to the good old days of winning national championships “Seattle Metropolitans” style.

Here’s a brighter future: Forward this issue to 10 guys you know and cc picks@seattlepicksformen.com, and you could win a Gift Certificate for a free 1-night stay in a King room in the swanky Hotel Monaco. Spend it with your wife, your girlfriend, your boyfriend (we don’t judge), put up your in-laws for a night, give it to your boss for Christmas… or just be a “king” for a day. And spread the word about SPFM.

Miss Your Favorite Tee?

Remember that really cool T-shirt you used to have, the one with the killer design that the girls would always comment on? You know the one; it got really worn out and finally ripped during a game of Ultimate Frisbee. You took it home, felt a little bit sad because it was a better wingman than your best friend, and tried to recreate the design in Photoshop. How much money did you end up spending on second-rate iron-on transfers for a reincarnated shirt you could never bring yourself to wear?

Here’s an idea: Dig out that old tee from under your bed and bring it to the folks at B-BAM Custom Apparel. If your pirated version of Photoshop isn't working so well anymore, don't worry, you can have one of their in-house graphic designers recreate your beloved design for you.

Check out their website too—you can easily design clothes online and have them shipped anywhere in the country. So no matter where you travel, you can always take your favorite wingman with you.

Drinking in Perfect Harmony

Walk into Smith in Capitol Hill, and the first thing you'll notice is taxidermy—pheasants cling to the back wall and deer stare down as you make your way to the bar. The lighting is dim and the wood plank tables practically medieval. It's a bar that makes you feel old-school comfortable. It's also a place where, if you're familiar with the Capitol Hill bar scene, things start to seem real familiar.

Smith is brought to you by the owners of Linda's Tavern on Pine and King's Hardware in Ballard and rapidly approaching its own one-year anniversary. Business is brisk, and rightfully so; just like Linda's, Smith has a great jukebox; tallboy cans of Rainier, and the wooden booths are a perfect place for hipsters to slouch.

But unlike the draft beer and pot pie at Linda's, at Smith you can order a Cabernet Sauvignon and sweet-potato fries off their recently redesigned menu. Perhaps it lacks some of Linda's edge, but how many other places do you know of where skinny jeans and the condo contingent coexist?

One Bourbon, One Scotch, One... Greco di Tufo?

Oh yeah, we understand the complexities of our cars, our golf game and the code we're writing, but outside our obsessions we like to keep it simple, right? It definitely seems that way with our drinks. Beer. Whiskey. Vodka. Gin. Mixers are okay, but if there's a place where you should stick those little umbrellas, it's not in our drinks.

But if it's the complexity of wines and their mysterious culture that keeps you away, The Local Vine might change your tune. With near vengeance, they are out to destroy all preconceptions about wine the easy way—by making it accessible, casual and fun. The wine list demystifies the experience with playful categories like "Cheerful," "Engaging," and "Boisterous" that you can use to suit curiosity with mood. The food menu lists wine pairings for ease and insight. Selections are available by the glass so you can feel free to explore while smiles flow freely.

Study up to find the best wine for the money or impress your date by exploring the complexities of wine demystified... together.

Swingers Party

We were good golfers last season. But by this spring we were hacking like beginners and swearing like sailors.

A frustrated call to the old man got us this advice: "Do every indoor thing you can find until the sun reappears." Of all the things we tried, the one that provided first-year results (20+ yards to our drive) was strengthening the muscles used in our swing.  We recommend the PowerSwing Trainer by Golf Gym to do just that.

Up to Your Neck

There are those (you know the ones) who utilize themed neckties to showcase their “cleverness” or “originality,” resulting in familiar fashion abortions like reindeer ties at Christmas. We laud their chutzpah, but we know that individuality in business attire requires taste and, ahem, some subtlety.

Enter Lee Allison, who sold his very first designs to Barney’s, an undisputed bastion of taste. While offering a whimsical quality to more staid designs, he's also pulled off themed neckwear with some sophistication.

Bluetooth Goes Green

Ever responded to someone in public, realizing too late that they are speaking into a Bluetooth? They shoot you a look like you're a psycho while you think, “What a jerk.” This, of course, only happens between Bluetooth conversations of your own.

To make sure you keep on the less awkward end of these moments, you need the Iqua BHS603-Sun, the first solar-powered Bluetooth headset. Solar technology provides infinite talk time in the sun, in addition to the eight hours of battery life.
