  Seattle Picks for Men
  life + style to you
July 25th, 2008

We've been having a lot of fun around town these last few weeks. Twice, we've skipped out of work early to play golf; we've been late to work several times because of "doctor's appointments"; and we've missed several unnecessary meetings because of conflicting lunch engagements. All in all, we've had a very productive month at our day jobs.

It's times like these that we find ourselves repeatedly returning to Internet job boards to look for fun, rewarding positions that could get us outside and increase our interactions with interesting people and things—like being a travel writer, a park ranger, or a civil servant for the IAEA. And what do you know—we have an open position or two at SPFM. If you think you can throw down the good stuff twice a month and write for us, send a 175-word sample "Pick" to editor@seattlepicksformen.com. We might be able to make it worth your while.

Find Your Sunday Best

When it comes to classic dress clothing, men often have very few options. In department stores, we're usually regulated to a back corner or to the third floor between a utility closet and the restrooms; independent stores are hit or miss-by-a-mile; and most second-hand stores are a disappointment, as they consider vintage to be the 70's, classic the 60's, and everything else ancient.

Thankfully, we have Gentlemen's Consignment—and we like to imagine it as being at J. Peterman's garage sale if he lived off East Madison. Here you'll find a surprisingly wide selection of newer and truly vintage suits, pants, sweaters, hats, and shoes in near-perfect condition. Whether you’re looking to enhance your current wardrobe or build a new, funkier one, you’re bound to find something totally original and in excellent condition.

Prices, selection, and store hours are subject to change, but Gentlemen's Consignment will always be a good stop if you're looking to bolster your chances for that promotion, or to create the perfect Sir Anthony Eden costume for the weekend.

Get the Picture?

Seattle has a lot going for it: great natural beauty, a vibrant arts scene, and top-notch places for food and drink. Unfortunately though, we are generally lacking in one key urban category: unique movie theaters. Yeah, we have Cinerama and the Landmark group, but unlike the small venues enjoyed by our friends across the Columbia, the big houses don't always hit the spot when you want more than just a movie—unless you consider flat Coke and chemically-buttered popcorn to be a satisfying culinary experience.

Thankfully for us, there's Big Picture in Belltown. It’s a one-screen theater with a lobby worth waiting in. Snacks and beer can be ordered before showtime, and second rounds can be delivered to your seats halfway through the movie. For those who believe a movie isn't the same without popcorn, Big Picture pops it fresh and covers it in white cheddar cheese.

We don’t even care what’s on their lineup—we’re just stoked to hang out, catch a flick and have a cold one served to us as the big screen flickers.

Lift a Pint, Boyo

When’s the last time you were in a rowdy Irish pub? Downed a few Guinness, rubbed elbows with the young and the restless, listened to a live band play “Danny Boy” until you wanted to cry… that’s good times right there.

So may we suggest Kell’s for a taste of Ireland? Nestled behind Pike Place Market on the oft-forgotten Post Alley, you can hear the Irish tunes reverberating through the alley as you approach the bar. Get closer still, and you’ll see long lines of eager patrons waiting for their turn to sit at a redwood-colored table and imbibe dark beers and stiff whiskeys.

A warning: On the weekends Kell’s can get rowdy—energy drinks and vodka are the cocktail of choice—so if you’re not looking for that kind of frat-guy-meets-loud-Pirate experience, come by during the week when you can enjoy the big U-shaped pub with some elbow room, get some great deals at Happy Hour, and mix with a more subdued crowd.

Best Key-Chain Accessory Ever

Let's be honest. Sometimes we would rather keep our Web-surfing habits private. So the StealthSurfer lets you keep Web bookmarks, Internet history, cache, and email off the computer and with you for convenience, privacy, and security.

From not wanting the boss to know that you read "The Onion "on company time to not wanting your girl seeing that you were looking at, well, let's just say "jewelry for her," it's a good bet.

Come Clean

Though it's been decades since we gave up bath time and relinquished our rubber ducky for the more adult shower, we see nothing wrong with elevating this daily ritual to something a bit more luxe.

Which is why we invested in the DTV shower system by Kohler. Its design allows for six different user presets that control everything from the hydro-massage speed to water temperature. Program your ideal shower and enjoy it at the touch of a button.

Pump Up the Volume

At the risk of revealing both our monumental laziness and our current obsession with "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" reruns, we can't keep this one to ourselves.

The Entertrainer is hooked up to both a heart-rate monitor and your television. After entering your age, gender, length of workout, and fitness goal, this gadget will detect if you're slacking, and turn down the TV until you pick up the pace. Genius.
