  life + style to you
August 22nd, 2008

Ah the Olympics. The time for countries around the world to come together in the spirit of sportsmanship and cheat in every which way possible. Despite the challenges of fair play, it's nice to see competition in events that we don't generally watch during the course of an off-year. Sports like: fencing, running with a stick, ping-pong, and basketball where traveling is actually a penalty.

It's too bad that basic cable coverage of the games is so sporadic and reliant on highlights. Too bad for us, and too bad town-planning and drawing hasn't been around since 1954.

Tee Rex

Women in small clothing aside, what is summer about if it isn't about traveling, barbecues, drunken lawn games, random adventures and finally going out without having to carry a jacket? Oh, yeah! It's about having to sport those old, broken-in T-shirts that everyone you know has seen you wear for the last four summers.

Face it. The luster of your old collection is fading as fast as the ink you once trusted to express your love for [insert favorite hobby/rock band/tatoo parlor here]. Thanks to Destee Nation in the Fremont district, you can now revive your reveries while looking as solid as the man you've become.

Culling designs from local hot spots and cultural epicenters along the west coast, Destee Nation—“Real Shirts from Real Places”—is a straight up T-shirt shop that understands the connection we have between places, things, and who we are as men. They carefully choose local designs for re-creation based on relevance and artistic impact so you can look great while representing the best of our local landscape. Mix old with new and rock your affiliations without rocking the fray.

Tini Bigs

We know, we know: Tini Bigs is no secret. But after our recent visit, we were again impressed, as the growing buzz of regulars and loudly toasting business crowd welcomed casual Friday, and the background hummed in a soundtrack of Sinatra's crooning salute to Vegas, dice games, and loose starlets. Really, our only complaint about this Belltown martini hangout is that the pink lighting makes everyone look pretty. Don’t be mistaken; they are not.

But at Tini Bigs, the scotch list is impressive and their 27 martinis, playful. Plus, the ladies are aplenty and cigars are not deterred. The owner has definitely set a mood that wills you to follow along like the look your wife would give you as you cracked a Pabst's during a dinner party.

Unfortunately, Tini's doesn’t open until 4 pm, so we can’t bank on two-martini lunches. But don't be afraid to bring the corporate bigwigs for happy hour, because this list of man bites are cheap and tasty, and let’s face it, the Chairman of the Board definitely approves.

Call it A Lorry's Uncle

There are certain things that make a good neighborhood pub: primarily it being in a reasonable proximity to where you live and being open as much as legally possible. From here, we all have different interpretations of what 'good' actually is.

If you are: A) an English expat who hates suffering through the wrong type of football on ESPN before highlights of the Premier League begins; B) one who can't quite justify subscribing to both Beer Advocate and Northwest Brewing News; or C) one who has a thing for logging, pine-wood furniture, and rotating taps—you may want to check out The Dray, located in the armpit between Ballard proper and Phinney Ridge.

The Dray serves up creative sandwiches and breakfast eats, Stumptown coffee, and a wide selection of beer on tap and in bottles. And if you are waiting for friends, don't have any, or just like drinking alone, The Dray's got you covered with magazines and soccer on the tube.

Sonoma Seat

From wine country in California comes our favorite (and most functional) piece of furniture of the summer…and green-friendly to boot.

Made from 70-gallon wine barrels (with the winery of origin stamped on each piece), these beautiful chairs fold almost completely flat for easy storage. Our favorite part? They look as great indoors for the summer as they do on the deck.

Now track down the wine that was once in it and enjoy.

This is Soooo Seattle

The growing number of Jet-City drivers going green will be giddy with this product. G-Oil by Green Earth Technologies is made from American-grown base oils, providing an enviro-friendly alternative to your Penzoils. At about the same price as synthetics, the bottles are 100% recyclable, and even have soy ink on the biodegradable labels.

Our favorite part? After 3,000 miles, just mix the used oil with G.E.T.'s Disposoil and fertilize your lawn, saving a trek to the containment center.

Dress the Part

In the mod, late sixties and early seventies of London, rock & roll fashion was pretty much at its apex (see: The Rolling Stones).

It was with this fashion sensibility in mind that Like a Rock Star was born. Churning out an outrageous line of suits (Naughty Behavior being our fave), it encompasses a style that is either long gone or long in the making… depending on how you look at it.

Confession: our lady friend is out of town and we found ourselves peeking at Seattle Picks [for Women]. Good stuff. Seriously, we now know what to buy her, where to take her for dinner, and how to judge a good from a bad from a terrible date night. Check it.
