September 12th, 2008
September. The reason why we almost always forget Oktoberfest is this month. Though the sun is starting to set before happy hour ends, we take solace in autumn beers, football season, and the absurdity of an apparently endless supply of videos with presidential candidates standing in front of chroma-key backdrops. It was interesting for a while, but now we're getting a bit tired of indefinite 24-hour loops of “breaking” election news. For the next two months, our TV is going on a no-news diet. For a change of pace, we plan on hitting up the local newsstand for actual news… and this is not just a pretense to chat up the girl behind the counter… |

Finding Savile Row
Yes, the choices are quite limited when you are in dire need of proper suit in Seattle. It’s like a scavenger hunt, leading you to the next neighborhood boutique, just to be disappointed with their off-the-rack, made-in-China garments. Should we blame Microsoft and Amazon for the downfall?
Who knows, but if you haven't come across Kuhlman, you have yet to find Seattle's finest in Savile Row traditions. Located in Belltown, underneath Ace Hotel and right next to Cyclops Café in the old Latona building, you will find the city’s finest in bespoke tailoring. Drop by and owner Scott Kuhlman will assist you with making choices in wool to create a masterpiece for any male physique.
Kuhlman also does an amazing job with shirt, pant, and jacket alterations, and they carry quality labels such as Paul Frank, Penguin, and Steven Alan. And don't be surprised when you drop by if you see Seattle's business elite mixing with local rock star icons, as they all get measured for bespoke suits here.

New American Cooking Goes Local
Ask anyone from Seattle—the last neighborhood that comes to mind for exceptional cuisine is Wallingford. But smack dab between Interstate 5 and Highway 99, this quaint north-Seattle family hood is—quite surprisingly—home to a masterfully renovated Craftsman-style bungalow right off the side of the road, which houses an exceptional restaurant.
Tilth Restaurant is definitely a place to discover the essence of New American cooking and it certainly has the credentials to arouse your appetite. Just this year, The New York Times placed Tilth in the Top 10 Best New Restaurants, and in 2005 chef and owner Maria Hines was named one of the top best new chefs in America.
By using only seasonal and organic Northwest ingredients, Tilth creates amazing and accessible dishes, sure to please any diner. The menu includes items like Grass Fed Hanger Steak and housemade Ricotta Gnudi—so Chef Hines will have you a raving fan within minutes. They also boast an extensive wine list, and on Saturdays and Sundays, drop by early for the 10 am brunch.

In the Mood For a Few Coldies?
Men like the idea of Australia: crazy wildlife experts throwing down with dangerous beasts, the testosterone from a rugby scrum, and edgy award-winning actors who wear cowboy boots to the Oscars. Unfortunately, most of the places where we can get a taste of "down-under" are belched-out chain restaurants serving over-seasoned beef with the texture of a kangaroo pouch.
The Kangaroo and Kiwi Pub, off of Aurora in North Seattle, offers a more authentic sampling of pub life in Australia. The menu offers Aussie favorites like meat pies, lollies and biscuits, and "chips." Don't be afraid to ask for a vegemite sandwich (no really), because they also offer a wide variety of Aussie novelty items. Of course, The Kangaroo and Kiwi also offers plenty of cold beers from New Zealand and Australia, and the “real-thing” bartenders will be quick to correct you that Fosters is in fact made in Canada.
Stop by any night to catch up on rugby, cricket, or a Premier League match, or perhaps just to enjoy a Cooper's Vintage Pale Ale.

Leather Be Light
The thunderstorms a couple of weeks back knocked out our power, and after fumbling around in the dark trying to remember where we put that damn flashlight, we were reminded of our intention to get a pocket-sized light.
Turns out that a local outfit, Leatherman, makes 'em, and like their multi-purpose tools, they make 'em the best. Features like one-hand operation, stainless steel, LED design and one-battery set-up deliver maximum power and durability with minimum weight. Oh, and no dimming.

Anyway, no matter what your use, the grainy images you've experienced are now a thing of the past. With cutting-edge auto-focus technology and Carl Zeiss optics, this affordable little unit delivers the best clarity we've seen yet, even in extreme close-ups. Of what? That's your business.
