life + style to you

September 26th, 2008
Oh right. A friend recently brought to our attention the cold weather and hazy fog that's been hanging around downtown. For a while we thought it might be signs of a coming supernatural disaster—or perhaps a new M. Night Shyamalan flick being filmed in correlation with the new H&Ms, but then we figured it out. Fall. Apparently that last week of summer never happened, and we just kind of forgot about it, what with football season and beer festivals every weekend. All in all, it really has been a nice transition. |

The Art of Living
Sometimes, it's hard to know if that new pair of designer jeans makes us look suave—or just stupid. If we are going to fork over the money for some new high-quality threads, we want to know that it's well spent and will make us look, well, suave.
Thanks to Presence, a small men’s and women's boutique near Harvard Exit, we can get that reassurance and know it's as genuine as the top name brands that fill the store. Labels such as Bread, 4 You, WESC, and English Laundry are among the staples that Presence diligently seeks out and stocks to keep you up-to-date and looking good. Inventory does rotate, so something great on Monday may not be around on Friday, but a great selection of unique shirts and shoes rounds out the guys' section for when you need a complete overhaul.
Drop by the store and remember that the owner will take care of you and won't be shy about saying “no” when you try something on that doesn't work for whatever reason. And tell them SPFM sent you.

Hideout on First Hill
Everyone needs an escape. Whether it's from work, people, worries, or daily life, it's always good to gain some distance from your troubles. The classic destinations include a good
(or bad) book, sleep or alcohol-induced unconsciousness,
and Prague, or better yet, just a favorite place that’s out-of-sight to unwind.
The appropriately named Hideout on First Hill is just what you want it to be. It's hard to find and dark inside for those wanting obscurity, it's plastered with art for those that complain about SAM's ban on Bloody Marys, and it sports a vending machine near the back that dispenses objets d'art and objets stupide if you have a twenty weighing you down.
You might not be familiar with all the drinks on the menu, but you will find that they are all prepared with great booze and honed skill. The signature cocktails come with a surprise related to their name and happy hour lasts till 7 pm. Hiding out has never been so fun.

Smoke like a Sailor
Growing up dad used to take us to the local tobacco store. We would wander aimlessly throughout the store, eyeing the pipe tobacco and cigars. So when we recently came across F.K. Kirsten Tobacconist in the Fisherman's Terminal, there was quite a bit of nostalgia to the experience.
When you first enter F.K Kirsten Tobacconist, you will notice how the store is decked out in a nautical theme; an appropriate reference to the founder's sail to the new world over 100 years ago. Roam the shop freely and enjoy their vast selection of imported and domestic cigars, humidors, lighters, flasks, knives, and even a tobacco bar with more than 23 house blends. But their mainstay is their own signature line of tobacco pipes. You can customize your dream pipe to your specifications by choosing among a variety of stems, bowls, mouth pieces, and color.
F.K Kirsten Tobacconist is still very much a family owned business, and they just recently opened up a downtown location at Westlake and Denny to further enrich your tobacco choices.

Power to the People
Look no further than Northwest footwear outfit RYZ. This Web-based company was founded by a former President of Adidas, and they provide an online forum where young designers can simply download a sneaker template, add their graphics, and submit for review by a panel of artists. Then we get to vote on
the finalists.
Our fave is this one by Seattle Designer FlewTheCoop. As an SPFM reader, just enter the code SEAPICK for a full $20 off of your purchase.

The Ice Man Cometh
A big dilemma in the state of Washington: Most alums of WSU live in Seattle. So when those who love a cold drink need ice (yes, even on a crisp day) they better buy a lot, after all it's a long drive, right?
Wrong. Pick up one of these handy portable ice makers. Great for any outdoor soirees, you simply plug in and add water. Enjoy the pre-game Martini.
