December 26th, 2008
Welcome to Seattle Picks for Men's first-ever "Writer's Favorites" issue. Our staff is diverse, and so are the selections. But according to them (and we trust 'em), these are the best places for a man to eat, drink and shop in the New Year.
So enjoy getting to know the lads a bit. Check these places out if you haven’t already. And drop us a line at picks@seattlepicksformen.com to let us know about your own favorite places.
Now we're going to go back to justifying listening to post-Christmas Bing Crosby. |

Lost and Found (by Tyler Guthrie)
The problem for us men with most boutiques in town is the troublesome "total men's selection/I would wear that" ratio. The latter is generally a constant 10%, while the former is all too often below two dozen items. This usually nets us only two to three articles of clothing that we seriously want to wear.
Thankfully, we've found MoMo. On the surface it's very similar to other boutiques in Seattle—great space, good brands, and a relaxed atmosphere. What caught our attention and makes us come back is the aforementioned ratio. Simply put: We really like what MoMo has to offer, from the limited-edition Iolani Sport Hawaiian-made shirts to the Spiewak outerwear and just about everything in between.
Located off Jackson in the International District, MoMo can be a destination in itself (though grabbing some Chinese BBQ beforehand is always a good idea). Check out the apparel, accessories, shave products and socks and then tell us what you think! For us, what came to mind was serendipity.

The Friendly Host (by Brian Lubeskie)
We've all met a guy like this—the crazy Texan who believes the words "BBQ" and "cowboy boots" were in the Pledge of Allegiance. The same man who nurses a fire-pit for 12 hours, only drinks Lone Star Beer and even drives his BBQ pit to tailgate parties.
When we visited Casper's we were thrilled to meet such a man. Casper Townsend started a successful catering business with the help of his customized smoke-rig, and earlier this year he opened his popular "Supper Shack" in Lake Forest Park and has been offering free samples of his tender pork ribs ever since. What sets Casper's apart is the wide selection of Southern delicacies that are rarely mastered so close to Canada. His catfish, frog legs, and Florida-imported gator are fried perfectly.
Stop by Casper's to "Put Some South in Your Mouth" or
to sample some fried gator. This Texan will be happy to speak
with you about your catering event… or his latest gator
"wresslin" scars.

Our Impression Now (by Donovan Pierce)
You know you've had a good shopping experience when you leave the store feeling like you've just left a good movie. The finer details slowly creep into your thoughts later, like an ex-girlfriend finding her way back into your bedroom.
Shortly after leaving Nuvo Moda, we came to realize that it's the philosophy behind a business that separates one store from another. Nuvo Moda has a simple credo of choosing clothes for fit and style—while keeping the prices as modest as possible. Eschewing the trappings of overt label-centricity for the best and most interesting product, this is a place with real style where you can really get down and shop. The stock is a few notches above casual, and includes jeans, button-ups, suits, slacks and shoes from American and European designers. We were impressed to find many items with slim lines, standout fabrics, interesting details, and patterns that speak without yelling.
Nuvo Moda is the perfect fitting ground for the night out that leads to a night in. So be careful.

Psst, Your Tap is Open (by Tyler Guthrie)
We can get a drink anywhere. Given time, we'll get to know and like a bartender at any tavern, pub, hotel or hostelry in the city. There's nothing wrong with this, far from it, in fact; we like knowing that there is a tapped keg manned by a potentially cool barkeep within a half block. Unfortunately though, too often we are disappointed by the selection of what's currently in the keg.
With 24 unique Northwest brews on tap (and a big-ass fridge of international bottles to drink on site or take with you), Naked City Taphouse has come to our rescue. Through their RSS and Twitter feed, everyone in the city can stay abreast of what just got tapped, what's currently being poured, and what's coming soon to Naked City. It's a brewpub where tapping a new keg is a celebration, and where every third person seems to be a home-brewer.
It seems that the Alaskan Smoked Porter just got tapped. Meet us at Naked City in 30?

We Heart This Place (by Brian Lubeskie)
Haircuts have become a chore for us. We schedule them between meetings or at lunch—anything we can to do avoid the weekend appointment, where screaming children vie for the last seat in the lobby. And due to our last-minute approach, we often get stuck with "stylists" who are bitter, ready-to-vent ex-wives, the kid who dropped out of court-reporting school, or army veterans brandishing clippers.
At Valentine's Men's Grooming Salon, leather chairs replace stools, and visits begin with a consultation about the cut that best suits your lifestyle, work, and fashion. Owner Thaddeus Valentine's reputation has grown his business from a one-room shop to the hip, elegant space it inhabits today off Greenwood. Valentine believes in attention to detail and is as meticulous with his shears as with the imported espresso (it's complimentary) and sleek tunes that enhance the relaxed mood.
We recommend upgrading to the King of Kings Treatment, which includes a Sirotzki Shave, or the Groom's Treatment, which may leave you second-guessing previous commitments after the attention you'll get from the lovely manicurists.
