January 23rd, 2009
It seems we missed a bit of local news recently. Thanks to how busy we were this last summer/fall/winter, we seemed to have overlooked the installation of a new-ish statue in Fremont. It's not anything as ironic as the statue of Lenin or bombastic as the Rocket Ship, but something more playful and a bit bizarre—J.P. Patches. It might have been due to Hempfest coinciding with the statue's unveiling, but we just now got around to visiting the local clown.
Since hearing that Krusty The Clown was based on J.P. (and Portland's Rusty Nails), we're thinking of reviewing some old kid shows to see how much they have in common. That, or we'll just watch some old “Simpsons” episodes and call it good. |

Beautiful Chaos
We decided to visit our favorite burlesque show downtown. It's really all we have left for, uh, men's entertainment after Washington's new regulations for gentlemen clubs—we accepted the fact that we can no longer look the dancers straight in the eye but we gave up after they started wearing biohazard suits.
As we walked down 1st Ave., we were just as, uh, satisfied to find Jack Straw Filaments, a men's clothing boutique that opened last September. Named after The Grateful Dead tune, Jack Straw's layout is as earthy as the folk music records found throughout the store. The industrial racks and exposed brick wall add some modernization to the feel, but the design is perfect for its clothing, offering brands like Dries Van Noten, Yohji Yamamoto, and Gilded Age. Most of the clothes are hand-selected during the owner's (John Richards) seasonal trips to Europe.
John told us he wants Jack Straw to be a spot where clothing and people come together and encounter an atmosphere of beautiful chaos—kind of like burlesque.

An Odd Addition To The Hill
Capitol Hill is full of coffee shops, bars, and cafes—making a new addition to the neighborhood generally something less than remarkable. For the most part, in fact, something new means the destruction of something old and cherished, and this thing is usually stuffed into the bottom floor of a new condo development.
Thankfully when the Oddfellows Hall (across from Cal Anderson Park) was purchased, it was beautifully renovated and is now home to the Oddfellows Café and Bar. Looking like a bistro transplanted to 10th Avenue from Brussels or Bruges, the café is open and welcoming with exposed brick and hardwood throughout. The tables are pushed against each other making a semi-communal dining experience and a decent beer and wine selection rounds out a great breakfast and brunch menu.
The café and bar is open till late, and makes a great last stop after an early night on the town… or a really early day after.

Old-School Goes New-School
Usually the only time we give much thought to shaving occurs during the pre-date, post-shower 30-minute grooming period. The question arises: rugged or clean shaven? If we opt for not shaving we risk looking unemployed, and if we get so lucky she will be rubbing her face against a cheese grater. If we decide to shave, our made-for-convenience razors have us running for Kleenex like any Seattle sports fan last year.
Thankfully for the health of our skin (and hers) we have The Art of Shaving in Bellevue Square Mall. On our latest visit we first noticed the comforting, musky smell of leather and balm like your grandfather's barber shop (minus the sour whiskey). They prefer the old-fashioned approach but appreciate the qualities of new grooming technology. Their top-of-the-line signature products include pre-shave oil, ivory badger brushes, and engraved nickel or brush shaving sets.
Ask for a free shaving consultation or indulge yourself in one of their grooming treatment packages. We promise you'll toss that old electric.

She'll Love You for This One
We appreciate a Valentine's gift that she loves, but costs us little time and money. That's why we love Plywerk.
Upload a (clean) photo of you and your sweetie and they'll transform your image into something of a frameless keepsake by photofinishing onto solid wood or bamboo. Sizes from 4x4–24x36 are available for Valentine's delivery if you order this week. Enter seaval20 for 20% off. When you present it, tell her, "I thought this was so 'us'." Trust us.

"Throw" it on the 'Fridge
We possess very little organizational aptitude. Whether we're too scatterbrained or too lazy to use a calendar, one thing is for sure; we utilize many refrigerator magnets to hang reminders up.
Now we can look a little badass when we do it, thanks to these throwing star magnets. In case you were wondering, they made their way to the office because, is there any better way to hang up that note warning people to lay off your leftover Thai food?

Picture a Picture
Even if you were relatively early in jumping on the digital-camera train, you are probably like us and have a billion of old negatives of some fairly fantastic memories. And as much as we'd like to go back to that spring break in 1995 and snap some photos on our digi, we'll have to settle for the Ion 35mm slide and negative scanner.
High-res, fast, one-touch scanning is enhanced by features like editing software and automatic exposure and color balance.
Very cool.
