life + style to you

May 8th 2009
Men: Remember Mother’s Day. Whatever you do, do something. It doesn’t have to be big, it doesn’t have to be expensive; it just has to be. For instance: when we were in school, it was a card. When we were living across the pond, it was a phone call. Last year, it was a spa treatment. The point is—it was something.
Do you want to do something for yourself? Forward this issue of SPFM to 5 or more friends and CC picks@seattlepicksformen.com for a chance to win free entry into next month’s Scotch Tasting at the Bookstore Bar.
Everyone else who forwards this issue to two friends and goes to the Bookstore Bar Scotch Tasting will be given a free pour of the 12-year Glenfiddich on their next visit. Yeah, we’ve got your back. |

Green Up & Go
It’s very true that people judge us based on appearances. Fair or not, how we present ourselves to the world speaks volumes to those who don’t think twice and believe that we actually are with stupid or honestly believe mutton chops look sexy. Therefore, prove to the world that you care about her and green up your ride.
At the Green Car Company in Bellevue, environmentally friendly cars and trucks fill the lot and are available in many models, years, and prices. Check out hybrids like the now-classic Prius, Smart Cars, biodiesels, Volvo gas-to-biodiesel conversations, and an array of all-electric vehicles from cool cars to strange-looking bikes. With an associated garage, all cars can be serviced locally at very reasonable rates. They also specialize in plug-in hybrid conversions, Volvo conversions, and waste vegetable oil conversions for an even greener ride.
Do the earth a solid and show her that you really care with a new car. If you already have a diesel, swing on by to get an upgrade and learn how to use yesterday’s French fry oil for tomorrow’s commute.

Ready, Set, Vios
We are pretty sure that we can all agree on the following: we love food, we love reading, and we love beer. Okay, now that’s out of the way.
Enter Vios Café at Third Place, Ravenna’s newest restaurant located inside its largest bookstore. Vios (in Greek, “life”) began several years ago on Capitol Hill and has just recently opened its second location inside Third Place Books. The menu is large and affordable, offering Greek staples like hummus and pita ($5), souvlaki sandwiches ($7), and pastitsio ($13). Below the main dining room there is a pub, boasting 18 draft beers and a very chilled-out vibe. On top of all that, the service is good too; waiters are attentive and helpful. Finally, let’s not forget the last big draw for Vios—the adjoining bookstore. As if great food and beer aren’t enough, the bookstore—which you must walk through in order to get to the restaurant—is definitely worth a gander.
To recap: Greek food, an incredible selection of new and used books, and more than a dozen draft beers. Opa!

Drink In Prose
There is a certain classic feel that never goes out of style. It’s an atmosphere and ambiance that draws us in, sits us down, and transports us to a different place and time. This feel is made up of a few parts old-world wood, one part brass accent, and several great drinks.
The downtown Bookstore Bar has this feel in abundance. With classic books lining the walls, a delicious gastro-pub menu, and more than 60 classic and hard-to-find kinds of scotch within reach, we are tempted to don a bathrobe, grab our 1940s Underwood, and pound out a few chapters before midnight. It being May, outdoor seating will be available through October, offering the opportunity to soak in the sun and the many passersby.
While sipping a 30-year Glenfiddich and discussing Proust with friends, let your eyes wander the bookshelves and take in the eclectic works on display. Hidden gems are all over and everything is for sale—ask your bartender.

Lean into It
Seattle loves biking, the outdoors, and alternative transportation. Two big problems though: 1) the endless number of hills, and 2) the perpetual drizzle half the year.
To keep active (and train for those hills) in the winter or anytime, your best bet is the RealRyder training bike. It’s the first training bike to mimic the outdoors by tilting, turning, and twisting while you ride. Keep up the training—the hills are waiting.

Not a Paper Cup
We love coffee, hate waste, but want to be different. What better way to do all three than get a kitschy, seemingly wasteful, yet environmentally friendly coffee mug?
The I Am Not a Paper Cup Reusable Coffee Mug is all three. This thermal porcelain cup comes with a silicone top, is double-walled for heat retention, and is microwave and dishwasher safe—it can go places most coffee mugs can’t.

Grill Long
Men belong in the kitchen, but more importantly, in front of the grill. The problem we tend to face is a lack of having a truly manly apron. Not anymore.
Check out the F240 Leather Grill Apron from Outset. Made from durable brown suede, this apron protects from flame and hot grease. With an adjustable neck strap for all sizes and two deep front pockets, we can now grill for hours and look good doing it.
